Travel Tips

Currency

The official unit of currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS), divided into 100 cents. The tourism industry prices everything in US Dollars and they are the preferred unit of currency. Major currencies can be exchanged in the larger towns. Foreign exchange bureau in the main towns usually offer a better rate on traveler’s cheques than do the banks. ATMs are available in major cities only. Major lodges, some hotels and travel agents in urban areas accept credit cards, but these should not be relied on and can incur a 10% surcharge.

Passport

You will need a valid passport to travel to Tanzania and a visa. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date in Tanzania, otherwise, they will not even let you on the airplane.

How to get a visa?

Visas are available on arriving in Tanzania at airports and border posts.

It is possible to get your visa at the border going into Tanzania or at the Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam airports when you arrive. Allow extra time for this process. Please check prior to travelling to Tanzania, if this option is available for you. You can also ask us or the nearest Tanzanian embassy.

Health in Tanzania

Tanzania is a tropical country and vaccines are sensible (typhoid, polio, tetanus and yellow fever). Malaria is common and occurs all year round; you must take anti-malarial measures, especially in areas below 1800m! Always check the latest recommendations with your clinic or doctor.

Language in Tanzania

Kiswahili and English are the official languages spoken by most people living in Tanzania, you may also try to learn some basic Kiswahili before you go, to help you enjoy your trip more!

Laundry in Tanzania

Virtually all camps and lodges have a laundry service.

Food & Water

Food in Tanzania is of a very high standard. Tap water is safe in some places but we advise you to use bottled water for drinking and teeth cleaning to avoid any health issues. Bottled water is available everywhere even at the game lodges. It is advisable to have enough bottled water with you while on safari to avoid dehydration.

Security

Tanzania is a safe country to travel in. Tanzanians are warm-heart-ed and generous people and are eager to help visitors get the most out of their stay. Tanzania is a true example of tolerance and cooperation in our modern world, with an evidenced multicultural diversity that has co-existed for centuries and has a lot to offer the world by its example.

Language

Swahili is the official language in Tanzania, with many local dialects. English is the second official language and most people are quite fluent in English.
